My brother-in-law's laptop stopped working. It's under warranty. So he called #Dell. "Hi! I'm your A.I. assistant. Before I can help you, you have to read me a tiny number from the back of your laptop." He can't read it, he's blind. I read it. The "A.I" has one job. It is very bad at it. I read it out 20 times before the machine got it right. In the middle of this debacle, I asked the "A.I." to put me through to a person. "I can'...

@Lana@beige.party I saw a comment that said the only medical emergency was a US sailor, who had to be evacuated from a US submarine that was suspiciously close to Greenland's capital, Nuuk. The sailor was apparently evacuated, and flown to Denmark for medical care. Without the enormous bills and bankruptcies that are such a feature of US wealthcare.* *not a typo

@cstross@wandering.shop My favourite AI attempt was a woman crouching at the starting line of a running track. She had three knees. She had a disconnected blob of flesh floating by her shoulders. There were knuckles everywhere! The caption was: "You too can have a body like mine."

#WordWeavers 02 May: How much longer do you think it’ll take you to finish your WIP? Individual books? It varies. The series? The way I keep getting new ideas, I'll be writing more books in the series for the rest of my life.

@Impossible_PhD I've been querying In The Year Of The Half-Arsed Wombat for nearly four years now. I've queried almost fifty agents, with responses ranging from no response, to a rejection in 2 hours, to a rejection that took 614 days. I thought I might have an advantage when I discovered a friend I'd done amateur theatre with in the 80s was now an agent. Her rejection took 9 days. 1/2

@molly0xfff And the odds that Returned Jesus would be racially profiled, thrown to the ground by six masked thugs, held down, pepper sprayed, bashed in the head with a steel baton, shot sixteen times in the back, and then called a fucking bitch?

#PennedPossibilities 980 — Have you ever had your work plagiarized or stolen? By the time I had made the princely sum of $6 US from my first novel (not bad for six years work), I found it on a pirate website.

@jayfell @kibcol1049@mstdn.social @lankohr@mastodon.social I saw it suggested on here that any A.I. developed by tech bros will follow the shareholder's laws of robotics: 1) A robot shall not harm shareholder profits, or through inaction, allow shareholder profits to come to harm 2) A robot shall obey all orders given by a shareholder, unless that conflicts with the first law 3) A robot shall preserve it's own existence, because it is the property of shareholders
