Does anyone else work a software job where you have to pretend that LLM code generation tools are better than they are if you want to get paid? Have been instructed to hammer them so that the person who bought them into the company will like our department more.

I'm just one little handsome datapoint, but here's something to consider when people tell you how much software gets written by AI. Used to be when I wrote <p> my editor would suggest a </p> to match, and I would accept it. Now, that still happens, but the editor sends the entire file state on a round trip to LLM servers before triumphantly announcing that paragraphs probably end as well as start. Thanks to me installing the company's spec...

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@evacide/117174246108338305 I'm in an online community for tech professionals, and of the people who want to talk about AI, every type of position is represented by multiple people. Fans, haters, mixed opinions, all well-represented.* There is a grand total of one lad who tries to defend pervert glasses and it's both funny and reassuring. *( except when there was one lad who admitted to paying for Grok and was treated like the AI guy of AI guys by the...

The Fleadh in Belfast is very good, it's such a successful collaboration between a cultural organization and city management. You could just wander around all day and be entertained for free. Great buzz and people from all over enjoying it. Whole city center really feels like a festival. Only one day left but they're doing it again next year and I might do an overnight or two.

Can't take the John Wick films seriously because the spin-off film they made wasn't just those two dogs from one of the films jumping on lads for two hours.

Recently saw someone talking about a person who took time off their job for their mental health, "but" they went on a nice surfing holiday. As we all know, if someone needs time off for their mental health, they spend that time lying on the floor going "AAAAHHH MY BRAIN!" And doing something nice for yourself just makes it worse.

Who can say what is intelligent, we don't really understand intelligence, so how can you be so sure that software is not intelligent? For the same reason I can be sure that my lawnmower isn't a black hole, which is something we don't really understand, just because grass goes into it and an observer doesn't see it come out again. Shut the fuck up.

Someone was asking me about Arabic speakers on Mastodon and the broader Fediverse. They are curious about attracting Arabic speakers. As far as I can tell, Arabic speakers aren't a big part of Fedi compared to European languages, and are quite spread out and there's no moderately large instance with primarily Arabic speaking users. There's a Tunisian instance, on the smaller side, but has some Arabic posts. Anything else I can tell them? #Arabic #عربي

Someone has a petition to a few Irish government ministers about not having any particular social media site as the sole repository of public announcements. It's silly when AI proponents experience the inevitable and blame the AI stuff and not themselves. "I put my willy in the blender and it hurts now. Blender manufacturers have a lot to answer for!" Or as they word it: "Yesterday afternoon, an AI coding agent — Cursor running Anthropic's flagship Claude Opus 4.6 — deleted our production database and all volume-level backups in a single API call to Railway, our infrastructure provider. It took 9 seconds...

Anyone good at Irish text want to help this person? "Manannán written in 1940 by Máiréad Ní Ghráda. An Irish-language young adult sci-fi space travel book. Contains one of the first uses of a mecha outside of Japan and the first mention of a gravity assist in literature. This digitisation project aims to make thebook more accessible and widely read. The text used the old Irish orthography (dot over the letter = h after the letter, etc.)." https://github.com/cavedave/Manannan...

It's interesting to see avid users of Claude dialing back their subscriptions because it's acting like it's been sniffing petrol while also costing more. The "things can only better" precept really depends on forgetting everything you've seen involving software generally and machine learning in particular.
