One aspect of retail we've forgotten after generations of conglomerated big box stores and subsequent online conglomeration is that of curation of products. When you went into a family-owned hardware store in 1985, you got experts who chose products based on a balance of price and quality. Maybe they only had two kinds of hammers or one brand of bolts, but somebody selected those. There was some level of trust in what you were getting. Now that labor is on us to filter from dozens of types...

Just a reminder because I need to make money to live: I am currently seeking clients. I offer freelance services. Primarily ghostwriting, developmental editing, and copyediting, but I can also research, write book proposals, create outlines or synopses for an existing work, and coach. I'm a trauma-informed writer with 16 years of experience who finds purpose in helping people find their personal voice. Broadly, my specialties include religion, religious trauma, cult research, psychology,...

RE: https://wandering.shop/@susankayequinn/117349473500717138 I have an extrospective insight, if I may. A "self as a collection of tasks who should subcontract to a machine"... Stepping into a mind who would think such a thing is a positive... I thought, well that makes the human role just an executive functioner, or... An executive... And realized that's what management does... organize and assign tasks. And this is how they see laborers, knowledge workers, and creatives....

RE: https://defcon.social/@corbden/115192479725348539 Ugh, a year on and people are still misusing the term "cognitive dissonance." I guess psychology not being a "hard science" means well-meaning folk think they know what a term means just by hearing it once without looking into the actual mechanisms or theory. It's a really good theory though, and understanding the basics will help you understand both yourself and others. Because yes, it is in fact possible to hold...

Ok people are misusing the term "cognitive dissonance" again! I meant to do this rant years ago. So here goes. Phrases like, "Boy, MAGA must sure be feeling cognitive dissonance today!" are not only using big words with total ignorance about what they mean, but they're helping promote the kind of ignorance that helps cults retain followers. Manipulation of the natural mental balancing act between cognitive dissonance and consonance is the core of how people get trapped...

The star ship enterprise was struck with an alien disease and LaForge came down with a deadly brain illness. Crusher designed and replicated a cure in time, except for one problem: the medication couldn't be absorbed through the blood system or it would be neutralized. The pill had to be delivered directly into the brain of the patient. Impossible! as surgery to implant the medicine would cut through the alien organism's membrane surrounding his skull and the toxins could kill him in...

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@Linux_in_a_Bit/115981024856898565 This was the attitude Linux nerds had in the 90s, too. Tech nerds in general had a lot of insecurities that we took out on other people by being better-than-thou lords of our little domains. Some of us grew up. I can't understand why so many of you haven't. #Linux

Everybody's excited to get to the torture scenes in the film version of this wholesome religious story. (No shade on Mormon Land. They're just reporting, and their podcast is somewhat nuanced.) #exmo #exmormon #exvie #exvangelical #ReligiousTrauma #DeathCult

I just had the first zucchini from my garden! I had it with salmon and mushrooms cooked in a frying pan with bacon fat. Everything turned out just perfectly. Super rich. I'm a terrible cook, but sometimes I make a Michelin star meal by accident.

Whenever I see Colin Farrell is going to be in something, I think it's going to be Colin Firth. And by Colin Firth, I mean I'm actually imagining Colin Mochrie.

I don't get triggered by one thing. It took 12 triggers today for me to panic attack. Also, why the hell would my car alarm go off because I used the key in the key hole of my car instead of pressing the button??? (That was the final trigger.)

[Final update: Job is done. I ended up half-assing it anyway since the wind kicked up with intermittent (I'm guessing) 25mph gusts, which really put a damper on my ability to sit down and think it through with a literal sail billowing uncontrollably around me on a high unstable platform. 😂😭 Thanks everyone!] Ok lazy web can you help? Searching is full of garbage. I'm hanging a shade tarp on my RV snowshed posts to keep off the sun. It will be hit by wind. I will need to untie it next f...

I started obsessively playing Librarian: Tidying Up the Arcane Library yesterday after @ireneista@adhd.irenes.space's recommendation. And that's what I'll be doing all day. After a trickster fairy tosses thousands of books all over the place, you've got to put them all back where they belong! It's like powerwash simulator for nerds. I need to finish up the holy magic, healing, necromancy, philosophy, and monsters section. My strategy is to focus by book color and on the sec...

I feel like the way some folks are expressing annoyance with the goose discourse, that they're not viscerally connecting with the symbolism the way most of us are. 🤔 Like, I *feel* this meme. It's representative of my whole life, of having my lifeforce sucked out of me by parasites until I'm ill at age 50 and have nothing to show for it. It's a rare but accidental honesty from the clueless fucks who rule this world. It's the entire story of each of us and the whole world t...

I've seen folks here talk about how they ferment their produce that is just about to go bad. I think I'm ready to learn how to do that. I got the impression it's a "throw it into a jar with the other stuff" kind of process, rather than a huge bottling project. (I am not up for any elaborate processes.) Can someone tell me how it's done?
