Oddball, computer nerd, aspiring ecosystem co-creator, I've lead a strange and unlikely life. I dropped out of high school and was homeless for several years. During that time I learned Reiki, and how to operate and program Linux computers. I decided to get a job as a programmer, so I created a project and presented it at CodeCon 2004. That led to a career as a computer programmer. I'm now semi-retired and I've turned my attention to my other passion: gardening and ecology.

he/him

I copied a NetBSD image to the SD card for my Raspberry Pi but I realized I don't have the HDMI cable, nor an Ethernet cable. Isn't there some way to plug it into a host computer via the USB ports and have it act like a little LAN? #NetBSD #RaspberryPi

Remember that time when they accidentally built an enormous solar furnace in London? The power is there we just have to use it wisely. "It's raining soup, grab a bucket!" https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/london-skyscraper-can-melt-cars-set-buildings-fire-f8C11069092 #SolarPunk

Re-posting this video again. I've tried it out and yeah, laminated cardboard with wheat paste totally works, the result is as strong as wood (and a little lighter.) This is a near-perfect way to bootstrap structures and buildings. You can use waste cardboard, and wheat paste is incredibly cheap. I want to try sodium silicate ("waterglass") as a glue, it should make the resulting material fireproof and as durable as stone. #SolarPunk #SolarPunkSunday https://www.youtube.com/w...

    > The Nand Game! > You are going to build a computer starting from basic components. > The game consists of a series of levels. In each level, you are tasked with building a component that behaves according to a specification. This component can then be used as a building block in the next level. https://nandgame.com/ #PermaComputing

Solar panels powering A/C units is a stopgap, an interim measure. You're not really cooling anything off, you're just schlepping the heat from one place to another and engendering more heat to do it, that then has to make it back out into space through the CO2 and methane and whatnot. Our problem is to balance the energy leaving the Earth with the energy entering the system (from the Sun mostly but also from burning fossil fuels.)

  • View post

So yeah, it seems to me that we're doomed. Specifically our civilization in its current form cannot continue, because it's going to get even hotter, and that and the knock-on effects of that are going to overwhelm our fragile infrastructure. We might have done something about this in the past, but now it's far too late.

Mini (re-)introduction. I'm a computer nerd, sci-fi nerd, and eco-fanatic. I grew up in San Francisco where I reside now. I'm a recluse. I joined Mastodon and the Fediverse to: 1) Make friends. 2) Have interesting and constructive discussions. 3) Look at cute cats and moss and stuff. That's it. In particular I am not here to argue or call each other names. I love you until you fuck up and then I still love you but I won't brook your shit.

Remember that our problem now is not getting "enough" energy, it is that we use too much energy and are stewing in our own waste heat. We need to shine more. Literally. The amount of energy entering the system must be balanced by the amount of energy leaving the system or we will all die (sooner than we should, and taking much of the nice animals and plants with us!) One more time... (Apologies to those who have heard this before.) All the solutions we need to solve the climate crisis and take care of everybody at a decent standard of living while regenerating the damage we've done to the Earth's ecosystem (you know, that thing that makes the air) have already been developed. 1/5

We've been up on the land for about a week now. Just came back to get some supplies. Things are going pretty well this time. The weather has been okay. I even managed to plant a handful of Hopi Blue corn to see how well it might grow.

What will the new ecologically harmonious economic/technological regime be like? You spend way less time commuting, as most everything you need is nearby and you only need to work a couple of hours a week. Life is much simpler, but richer. You have lots of time to do... whatever. It's quiet because there aren't loud engines all over the place. Imagine a park next to a nice cafe and library, that kind of thing. #SolarPunk

    > The first ‘active’ greenhouse to be built, as was discovered by chance in 2001 in a historical document, was in 15th century AD Korea. On the basis of the surviving document, entitled ‘Growing Vegetables During Winter’, a reconstruction of the greenhouse was made, and it was found to combine traditional heating technology with sophisticated heat retention features and control of condensation. https://londonkoreanlinks.net/2019/11/22/the-worlds-first-active-greenhouse/ Via: https://per...

I keep orbiting around the idea of a "Sim #Permaculture" app. It would be both a game and a useful garden/farm management tool. I know of a few attempts to build something like that, but most of them stall eventually. With that in mind, I figure you'd start by defining protocols and data models that could outlast any one particular project and support interoperability. (FarmOS publishes their data models on their website.)
