Too much thin cloud with too much Moon on targets that were too faint. No overnight imaging successes. The framing on the SMC is better than the previous effort, though. Mind you, I am vaguely impressed that I got any data on NGC 6820 at all. It only rises to about 26 degrees and would be barely above the trees. #astrophotography #space #seestar

Not that I’ve got any chance of seeing it here, what with cloud, but Venus and the cressy Moon will be close together and very pretty tonight. If it’s clear where you are, look west from about half an hour after sunset. Aaaah. See?

And now that the Sun is a bit higher in the sky and clears the slightly-too-tall trees in the back yard, the in-laws have also stopped using electricity from the grid. The battery charges to full by about 1pm and it’s all export after that. And that’s with them not having changed their power usage behaviour at all. Just need to get their stove top replaced with an induction one (which apparently requires some re-wiring) and then gas can be disconnected.

When the leaders of AI companies all say the technology is dangeroous and needs to slow down, there is literally nothing stopping them spending their VC money on EMPs and solving their pearl clutching problems.

The weather has turned, so no more imaging from Melbourne for the next few days. I still have more spoils from the weekend, though. I finally finished a mosaic of the Lobster Claw and Cats Paw nebulae. These sit in the Milky Way near Scorpius and as with all red nebulae, they're hydrogen playing at being a neon sign. As the Milky Way core sets around midnight, we're getting a view *out* of the Milky Way when we look straight up in the early hours. With less crap in the way, we...

It looks like all the howtos for disabling AI shit on iOS27 are written by people who had manually turned them onto begin with. I’ve never had that crap and I don’t see half the settings I should apparently have.

✨ Are you in Australia and do you like being able to see the sky at night? The Australasian Dark Sky Alliance have submitted a petition to request parliament introduce legislation to control light pollution. Not to ban lights, but ensure lighting is effective and directed, not far too bright, and not on when and where not needed. If you’re an Australian resident or citizen, your signature would help. A lot. The petition is at https://www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/petition/EN7346 and you can f...

🦢 🦅 And one from last month, which I think hadn’t posted yet. The Milky Way core is back from around midnight, so all the shiny things near it are too. This pair are the Swan / Omega nebula in Sagittarius (M17, top) and the Eagle Nebula in Serpens (M16, bottom). The latter is more well known because of the Hubble “Pillars of Creation” photo. You can *just* make out those pillars at the center of the nebula. So yes, you can image them yourself from home with a $600 phone-controlled “toy tele...

Liberated the two largest zucchinis and pickled them for later according to a CWA recipe. One left for dinner and there will be more in the coming week for trading with the neighbours. Also popped coriander and spring onion seeds in a tray and put the rooty bay twig in a pot.
