RE: https://mastodon.me.uk/@ChrisMayLA6/117349846101298234 This article is horrifying in many ways. One thing that’s chilling is that the US is developing a national police service, with local police directly under Trump’s control. But the most horrifying thing for me is the kangaroo court system, where it’s proclaimed that a mass of individuals must show up to court within minutes, and when they fail to show — well, how could they? — this becomes grounds for deportation. When we take this coun...

I just did something I think will be very good for my mental health. I used @ birb @rss-parrot.net (I added spaces here to avoid triggering the bot) to create Mastodon feeds from three good news websites, created a list from them, and then pinned that list on the mastodon website so that it appears as a column. Now I have a column that saves my sanity. The three feeds are: @www.goodnewsnetwork.org@rss-parrot.net @www.onlygoodnewsdaily.com.home@rss-parrot.net @www.positive.news@rss-parrot.net

Capital One bank closed more than 300 Trump-affiliated bank accounts in March 2021 because of evidence of money laundering. Five years ago. I’m curious whether they reported their suspicions to law enforcement and what action, if any, was taken. Crooked Trump should be in prison, not in the White House. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/aug/01/capital-one-trump-organization-money-laundering

I support almost all of these goals. I don't know who designed the image, which came up on an image search. I found it here: https://www.facebook.com/Vivian4ILDems/photos/1345277134266400/

Most people consider me pretty smart. I've spend many years in further education and I've had several books published, for example. But when it comes to the Monty Hall paradox, I'm completely lost. Yes, I can say the words "It's better to switch" and I can parrot the explanation given here, but on a gut level I just don't get it. My dumb gut just keeps insisting that there's no advantage in switching. Check out this Mythbusters experiment and see what your gut s...

Yet another article about the Reflecting Pool disaster and Trump's lies about vandalism that fails to mention that when the pool was in the middle of being relined, Trump had his entire motorcade, including two limos weighting 20,000 pounds each, right through it from end to end. (Once again, if Biden had done it...) https://atlantablackstar.com/2026/07/18/what-happened-to-it-trumps-reflecting-pool-disaster-takes-another-wild-turn-as-eagle-eyed-viewers-spot-one-major-detail-has-vanished/

It sounds like the US government is going after a left-wing donor on completely spurious grounds. They’re demanding his extradition from Spain while providing no evidence of wrongdoing. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/18/fergie-chambers-stella-schnabel-spain-extradition

I just finished reading "This Is An Uprising" by brothers Mark Engler and Paul Englar. For a heavily-footnoted non-fiction book I have to say it was often thrilling. It tells the story of the rise and rise of nonviolent resistance, details its successes and some of its failures, and explaining what makes the difference. It goes a long way to being a "how to topple a dictator" manual, and for obvious reasons I think we've going to need it. HIGHLY recommended.

This is a brilliant article on the words that the Trump administration has expunged from its websites and publications. These banned words give a perfect illustration of who Trump represents and who doesn't matter. https://fiftysixdegreesnorth.substack.com/p/lost-words

I'm two thirds of the way through the first episode of Widow's Bay, and my main thought is what a waste of talent it is to have a fine actor like Matthew Rhys in it. I don't bore easily while watching TV, but I am SO bored. I imagine it must get better since it's been nominated for 19 Emmys, but I absolutely cannot bring myself to continue with it.

Yeah, sure. Did I celebrate my last birthday at Drag Brunch? Also yes. I even tipped with five-dollar bills. I contain multitudes, and would appreciate it if you focused on the brunch one."

At some point the US team is going to lose a match and Trump is going to be on the phone to FIFA asking them to "find" just two more goals, like he did when he called Brad Raffensperger and asked him to "find" 11,780 votes.

Kind of bummed that this petition against a monstrous AI data center has not yet broken 6,000 signatures. “One of the world’s largest AI data centres is being planned next to Auchtertool village in Fife, Scotland. The height of six double decker buses and length of 100 football pitches. An estimated 20% of Scotland’s energy will be consumed by this.” https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-proposed-ai-data-centre-near-auchtertool-fife

So of course it must be so huge that it is dangerous, irresponsible, unnecessary, and indicates our president is overcompensating for something."

Isn't that what Republicans have always done anyway and undoubtedly what they will do no matter which Dems are running for office? Yes, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be frightened about it and cover my ears and shout “NEENER NEENER NEENER!” every time I see a progres...

Sen. Bill Cassidy (GOP): “Let me just set the record straight: Our country is not about one individual. It is about the welfare of all Americans and it is about our Constitution. And if someone doesn’t understand that and attempts to control others through using the levers of power, they’re about serving themselves. They’re not about serving us. And that person is not qualified to be a leader.” https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/17/politics/takeaways-louisiana-senate-primary-bill-cassidy-donald-trump

Wouldn't it be frustrating to encounter post after post like that? Describe images. It's an act of love. Describe them as you would to a dear friend you were talking to on the phone.
