When I resigned from Debian in 2019, I wrote: At some point though, I will be back. Debian is part of my life, and always will be. One way or the other, there will be a way back. It may take years, or a decade, but I'll put on that swirly hat again. I will not be back. The Debian I knew is gone.

Google copied our open-source code, removed engineers' names without credit Yeah, they do that from time to time. It doesn't help that codegooners normalize "AI"-washing copyright and credits away with "I can rewrite chardet with an LLM and change its license, past contributors and copyright holders be damned", and "zomg it's just fair use, the LLM spit it out, we didn't know it's bit for bit stolen!!1". But yeah, when the Google steals your sh...

Last night I described an idea for a JavaScript-less theme switcher for my static blog, using a cookie and a little help from Caddy. Today, I implemented both parts. If you visit Chronicae Novis Rebus, you'll find a new menu item: theme. You can select your theme, it'll be stuffed into a cookie, and the site will remember it. No JavaScript, no localStorage, still a static site, with a tiny bit of help from the reverse proxy. I'm pretty darn happy with how it turned out. This will...

ROFL. I just ran a "detect AI generated code" tool on iocaine, and it's hilarious. Scores: Claude ████████████████████ 67.5% Gemini ███████ 25.4% GPT ██ 7.0% Copilot 0.0% Human 0.0% The signals it uses for scoring is hilarious. Follow along in the next few toots for some mind bogglingly bad takes!

Tabstack1 emailed me that they see I have an account2, but made no API requests3, and they would like to talk about why, to understand. Do I tell them? Should I tell them I only signed up to figure out how to block them, did that in two requests, thankyougoodbye? Mozilla's scraping platform. ↩︎ Correct. ↩︎ Incorrect, I made two. They both errored out, and revealed internals to the user, me. ↩︎

Okay. I'm at the PC now. Lets get down to business. I'll move OJF to the iocaine org first, will tweak my postfix config a little, then open up the port forwarding on Eru, so I can receive mail from outside - so I have something I can test with under production circumstances. Then I can get down and start writing the milter. There's an indiemilter crate I've been eyeing that looks like a good foundation to build on.

LInus has always been a techbro, to use a modern term. He had no problem using proprietary tools for kernel development, declaring LLMs "just a tool" is in the very same spirit. I'm sorry, but if you're suddenly disappointed, you haven't paid attention. He's always been like this. Anything social-oriented around Linux was despite him, not because of him. Is it sad? Yes. Is it surprising? No, not really.

Just laying out here in plain: iocaine does not rely on proof of work, stays out of the way most of the time, has no AI code (nor assets, or anything), will never have any AI code, and its author is unapologetically very much anti-AI. It still takes care of the crawlers, and can even automatically firewall them off for even lower load.

Can We Understand How Large Language Models Reason? No, we cannot. LLMs would have to start reasoning first, otherwise there's nothing for us to understand. #algernonReviewsHackerNews

I'm not in a computer touching mood today, it looks like. We also seem to have half1 the dogs and kids of our little town in our living room, so... I guess I'll go play. Counted 9 kids and 6 dogs, but there are two more rooms some could be hiding in. ↩︎

Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media Let me guess: because corporate social media is horrible? Who would have thought?! Now, if they'd join the Fediverse, followed hashtags like #Mosstodon, or #DogsOfMastodon, or any of the other delightful ones, they'd have a much better time! #algernonReviewsHackerNews

I woke up somewhat annoyed, looked at lobsters, hid 4 threads without looking at them. On one hand, go me, I don't need more annoyances in my life. On the other hand, there's a possibility my blocklist will be missing a few accounts. Chances are, though... I'll block the same accounts based on other threads later.

It's been a while I refreshed my pinned #introduction toot, and I figured today will be a fitting day to write a new one. Hi! Despite the avatar, I'm not a furry1, I'm a boring cishet white dude. Despite my privileged status, I might be considered a "terrorist"2 in some weird jurisdictions, and some companies3 will consider me a "malicious actor", because I built myself a crawler defense system that serves them an infinite maze of garbage. To them, I say: fuck yo...

AI in mathematics is forcing big questions Questions like: "What the fuck is wrong with you all", "Should I retire early, and go herd sheep?", "What have I done to deserve this?", and "Are you out of your mind?". Same questions are asked everywhere AI enters. #algernonReviewsHackerNews

If you're someone who wishes to block Mullvad VPN servers from acessing your stuff, on grounds that one of their founders is responsible for financing 70+% of a Swedish far-right party, I have some good news for you! I wrote a little script that grabs Mullvad's server list, from their own website, extracts the server list as JSON, and generates a few useful renderings of the data. My CI runs the collection nightly, there's a nice package overview, and you can grab the tarball with c...

I used to respect Software Freedom Conservancy, they seemed to be aligned with my values. Lately... our values started to drift apart, and today, they burned any bridges that may have been left. There is one choice, and only once choice for a FLOSS project when it faces LLMs: reject them. Anything else is a sign that they're willing to sacrifice their values on the altar of... slop, burnout, and capitalism. Good job, guys. Good fucking job.

he thought that ours could not get popular because it’s on Codeberg instead of on GitHub. That is the most techbro bullshit reason I've read today, and I've read a lot of techbro bullshit today already. It's 2026. Being on GitHub is increasingly a red flag.

Reimagining the mouse pointer for the AI era I know I should not have opened this, because it will cause permanent brain damage. Luckily for me, all my sanity left many moons ago, there's nothing left in there to hurt anymore! So I had a quick peek. And there, I see a demo, showing a recipe window partially covering a shopping list. Then, they strike out two items in the recipe, and hold the cursor over the shopping list to add the new items. Amazing. Now, tell me, what's wrong with...

It's a new year, but I just woke up with more thoughts about licenses and related things. I settled on EUPL-1.2 as my default about a month ago - this isn't about that.
