Hello Sharks, I'd like to present to you today the future of computing. I call it Stephen. Stephen is an intern. You submit prompts to Stephen, in the form of Jira tickets. Stephen then asks lots of questions, and then delivers something almost, but not entirely, unlike what you requested. We're asking for 1.2 billion dollars for 30% equity, so we can scale Stephen.

I spent my childhood alternately deeply relegious and entirely agnostic. I spent a lot of time listening to religious music, and especially "Contemporary Christian" and "Christian rock" Occasionally one of those tracks will worm it's way back into my head and I am filled with resent.

Absolutely fascinating to hear that the 7 up series will be concluding, 63 years later, with 70 up. If you're not familiar with British television (and maybe obscure British television? I feel like I only know about the series because of my work in video art, and not because of TV) 7 up was a documentary series that started as interviews with 14 random seven year olds, and became a series of interview's with those same 14 kids ever seven years as they aged. That crew, of course, is no...

Alright, so I've worked in a couple of datacenters. They were huge, they needed absolutely overblown power and water hookups, and they were mostly built in former farmland or other rural stuff at the edge of suburban areas. The one I spent the most time in was across the street from US-EAST. It was one of 12 DCs on that road, and there were at least three other roads in that area that had at least as many. They were average size for datacenters, but that meant they were Huge buildings....

So data centers have been in the news a lot recently, and that has me thinking about data centers. This will be a thread.

How many different Shakespeare plays have you seen? (Either live or filmed, but not adapted.)

We really loved those shows, and got a lot out of them. And we've got this great new toy, and nowhere to show him off! So, this is Kumiai-Ki, the Mighty Union Machine. He fights on behalf of Amazing Workers United against evil billionaires like Geoff Bozo and Elmo Tusk. He's hand made, by me, in north GA. He's made in a retro 3.75" style, inspired by the Shogun Warriors figures of the 1970s, and he's looking for a home. https://www.mountaintowntoys.com/kumiai-ki-the-m...

Made a pitstop at a random McDonald's off pearblossum highway and was treated to what might be the most pleasant surprise of the trip so far. Ordered an apple pie, expected the current "healthier" baked apple pie that every McDonald's has served since the mid 90s. nope! These fuckers are still frying their apple pies. Said baked on the menu, said baked on the box. Fried apple pie. Old school, too, with the little air bubbles. Last time I had one of those was probably...

My wife is preparing a drop of original pottery. These pieces all feature rayguns, or the silhouette of Kumiai-ki the might labor union mech. They'll end up on our website over the next two weeks in batches of 5 or so at a time. If you'd like a bowl, a tumbler, or a small plate featuring a raygun or kumiai-ki before they go up to the general public, reply here and I'll let you in on a sneak preview on Monday or Tuesday.

Hey! Do you have a favorite book on Chinese history, politics, media, or culture that: - is available in English - is not written from a US centric or Western centric POV - is not imperialist propaganda? - is approachable by a casual audience? I'm specifically looking for studies on Chinese literature, but also just generally looking to learn more about China and the culture and people of China with a minimal amount of the kind of hangups that come with most books about China available...

Or a little press kit of our handmade toys and comics, including #kumiai-ki the Mighty Labor Union Mech? Hit me up!

Y'all I can't even begin to express the depths of my disgust for every media institution that serves only as the mouthpiece for the powerful. Any headline about Sony's end of physical media that doesn't include "and people are upset" or "and everyone should stop buying sony products", and especially those that accept sony's framing ... That's a publication I can't trust anymore. It was the same with the headphone jack. Any publication that repo...

I've got a dude arguing in the comments on one of my posts that he has to use AI to produce music because he doesn't have the money to do anything else, and that if we really think he shouldn't be using AI, we should give him some money to hire musicians. ... This gets into some territory that I feel like I gotta dissect. First, musicians /should/ get paid for their work. Second, GenAI "music" more or less guarantees that the musicians who's work was stolen to p...

We are taught so little about recent history in American schools. I learned more about the Aztecs, the Ottomans, and the Roman Empire than I did about anything in the US, in spite of taking a class nominally about US history. I want to say we went deep on a few topics in that class, rather than covering breadth, because I liked and respected our teacher, but that's not true. We didn't learn history in that class, we learned a framework for writing essays and some basic skills for analy...

I had a conversation last night that I've been thinking about ever since. The person on the other end of the conversation was not speaking from a position of good faith, and so the conversation was entirely unproductive, but... Well, they were dancing around an interesting idea, just in a cruel way. so lets talk about it.

You can't be On all the time. You can't be fighting all the time. You have to rest. Feeling guilt or shame over the idea of rest won't help anyone. and part of that rest, often, is entertainment or play. Surely it's better if that entertainment or play comes from outside the system that seeks to crush us?

With the news that fox is buying Roku, I'm more determined than ever that we need a Community Entertainment System #CES But not that CES I've tried lots of different configurations over the last few years and been deeply disappointed with all of them. I've rolled my own software, and been pretty disappointed with it too. But things are more pressing now than they were before, and that makes me more willing to overlook some papercuts and instead focus on getting the 80% product.
