#ThreeGoodThings • rehearsal for next sunday's concert this morning; bononcini cello sonata is a winner, the continuo realisation worked well enough • i've kept tomorrow free of everything except the evening concert, which is good, so i can hack through, i mean practice, the d minor suite before setting off • stir-fry this evening

#ThreeGoodThings (supernumerary edition) • got a score back to the composer for comments, ahead of schedule, yay • finished realisation of a basso continuo line for a sonata i'm playing next week (this should not have been necessary, but it is and so i did it, a bit clunkily) • making good progress on the most straightforward of the other jobs, gave the piano reduction one a break today, but will get back to it tomorrow • there was a power cut this afternoon, which was obviously god saying...

okay eating grownuply — three actual meals in a single day, nothing highly processed, all vegan — has not magically made me feel any better and i have a headache now, so i am sodding off to bed, to contemplate the idea that i am allergic* to healthy eating, or veganism, or not being asleep * it’s probably a cold

#ThreeGoodThings (yesterday edition) • i took the afternoon away from editing. a kind of weekend-in-training half day* • made an exploratory walk to the ring road where the new aldi is, 40 minutes light exercise • arranged to catch up with older daughter by phone today, after a longish gap we were equally responsible for * it was for the most part not enjoyable, as it’s harder to step away from knowing how much work i have to do. and i couldn’t take a holiday from practise for upcoming concert...

if, after a morning hoiking books hither and yon at the charity shop, if i am falling asleep at lunch, what conclusion should be drawn? a) i am lazy and a layabout b) i am hungry to the point that the system is trying to shut down (like my laptop battery) c) i am old d) i am so ——ing tired i can’t even. tbh my upbringing gave me a) as the first answer, but i am beginning to question the truth of that. #ThreeGoodThings • it is a week of new boots. apart from the vastly expensive beauties i bought new, which are still in transit, a friend today gifted me a lovely pair of black boots with medium heels (thanks @SquirrelwithaninvisibleW@mastodon.social ) which are a tight fit but i adore. • i have had a worky day, in three tranches separated by non-work (or charity shop book wrangling) and ending with a short (and late, ending at 10pm) practice session on the cello. i only missed one meal, so i...

two, no three consequences of having too much editing work: a) a return of my neck/back ache, which i thought i had seen the back of (haha), but sadly not. b) forgetting to notice the time and therefore meals, and being too tired when i do notice to want to do much if any cooking. c) the low-level toxicity of feeling slightly behind schedule on everything — even though i am not, currently — because i might not have time to finish any of them.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@gutenberg_new/117301917726847754 omg this one, from the 1880s, is as bad as you might think from the title. not a surprise, but still i winced. what a waste of good electrons.

i was unexpectedly given a bonus fee for a job last month (complicated story, not the point). i need some new autumn footwear. i have had my eye on a pair of fearsomely expensive, well-made and gorgeous ankle boots for a wee while. they cost about £25 more than the bonus fee. should i go for it or is that ridiculous? it would be more than i’ve ever paid for any footwear ever, but unexpected money like this doesn’t exist in the world of sensible-jody. i’m very bad at decisions like this. any...

the poverty of imagination that gives us yet another revamp of a wildly outdated series with problematic attitudes, crowding out anything newer, by different voices, for different audiences. it feels like those in power demanding that the next generation experience their own half-remembered childhood. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c65y5xv3j90vo

#ThreeGoodThings (one good thing version) reading how others treat themselves well, or try to treat themselves well, or work to undo earlier trauma and treat themselves better, is one of the quieter benefits of being here for me. seeing what other people think is and is not okay. i live and learn.

this bbc headline (below) made me roll my eyes. i feel like the writer got into trouble at ‘linking’ and added ‘both’ to try to escape but it just caused a different problem. i spent a short while wondering how a bridge could link just one of them. “first road bridge opens linking north korea and russia” isn’t perfect but is better imho. we don’t need the active voice, since the agency of the countries is implicit. #wordplay North Korea and Russia open first road bridge linking both count...

#ThreeGoodThings • a cancelled rehearsal* meant a number of admin things got done that needed doing • including sending a couple of invoices for work completed in the last week or so • and some fod shopping, which i didn’t enjoy but was good in the necessary sense * this will be added to three bad things when we rehearse on thursday next week, since it kiboshed a social thing. so maybe three good things is a zero-sum game. i’m pretty sure that if i were to list four good things, someone else...

#ThreeGoodThings • had a day with no music in it* • walked about more or less randomly after sitting by the river for a bit in dappled sun and light breeze. this helped with a general jitteriness (of mind and body) • detarnished a silver necklace so it looks like new again, which is pleasing * no playing and no editing. full disclosure: there was some talking about music for a bit when a colleague rang to whom i could / did not say ‘not today’

#ThreeGoodThings • ate three times • domestic choring (some of) accomplished • made a str quartet arrangement of reynaldo hahn’s à chloris (not work, but to please myself, for use in future wedding gigs). i admit no clouds for any of these silver linings.

top story on bbc news this morning is another horrifying story about travelodge giving room keys to the wrong people. the headline case is the worst of the cases that have made it into the media. the worst so far. there are other incidents in the story. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgx1v922p5o

when someone in the public eye is trying to defend themselves against allegations of wrongdoing (hello gianni infantino!) they say the accusations are ‘categorically untrue’. i looked up the word ‘category’ and was surprised to learn that its root is from the greek katēgoriā (= assertion, accusation). this is from katēgoros (= an accuser), made of kata (= down, against) and agorā (= assembly). the other surprise in english for me was the gap in meaning between category (= a class of things sh...

thought i’d try #ThreeGoodThings which has been on hiatus in my head recently. • weather has been tolerable for a little while, a state which will last another day, but not into the weekend’s gigs, sadly • listened to 1000 Rabbits who were live on bbc radio suffolk last night. (not as it was broadcast, i’m lucky bbc sounds exists.) nice to hear them talking about their time at aldeburgh young musicians • some other thing i have forgotten.

the visitation of the daughter over the weekend resulted in the miracle of the leftover half bottle of wine, and the efficient editing of the unicorn score (see toots passim) has caused the editing day to finish early, so it is now official jody’s happy hour! #FindingJoyInTheEveryday or something.

today in charity shop books, i was looking closely at the attached pamphlet, published in 1744. presumably campaigns in the war of the austrian succession (not my area, please advise if that’s the wrong war). anyway, difficult to value, as copies are vanishingly rare. i was writing a description, and sadly discovered that it is missing a folio (pp 5-6 are absent) which is a value-killer. i’m waiting to hear back from a senior books person about it. it’s possible to restore the missing page wi...
