I found the other day a toot that said something like: "I don't want to become more conservative with age. When, in the year 2169, uplifted orcas are protesting for the right to marry their clones, I hope to be right along with them".
The thought is a masterpiece by itself, but it makes some assumptions that I want to explore.
It assumes that there are some privileges, called rights, that are granted by some powerful institution that controls society (the state), and that there are some people who are denied these rights. Progress is expanding the number of people whose rights are recognized and guaranteed by the state.
My problem with this assumption is that there is no solution. There is no point where all people have the rights they deserve. And if we see the real world, there is no end to the evil people trying to take away rights from those who deserve them.
I'd rather build a world where people don't need to fight for their rights, where they don't need to negotiate with asshole gatekeepers to live the life they want. Where Orcas can marry their clones from the start, because the state is not gatekeeping marriage, or any other part of the human experience.
