At some level it has to be completely destructive to your one idea of self worth, and destroy all your bridges to others. Everything becomes a game of survival, a zero sum game and a prisoners dilemma where you desperately try to hide that you defect at every opportunity. The only reason for some temporary ally that you defect together, and then defect on them.
