@Goodworkdog@sunny.garden Thanks, there are a few complicating factors with this poor little guy, so I'm just poking around for ideas to figure out what might work. At a guess, based on behavior and the few clues I got when adopting him from the local pound, someone tried an outdated punishment technique for housetraining that obviously didn't work, then got quickly frustrated and stuck him in an outdoor kennel with minimal interaction for a year or so. He seems fearful of being *seen* going potty( though I've managed to get him to go outside on leash and praise heavily occasionally), and didn't appear to recognize any basic commands or the name he supposedly came with at first( actually looked confused that a human would speak to him and started looking around for the other person I was addressing!), yet he's obviously intelligent and picks things up fast when you can get him calm enough. He also is exceptionally prone to panic when in an outdoor setting compared to indoors. Unfortunately very little if any inhibition about pottying near sleeping areas as long as he's not being watched.
