There's this thing about it, where these projects going mask off is good, actually - knowing who to avoid is important! - but it hurts in the moment, a lot, because the revelation comes AFTER a lot of people (users and devs alike) came to depend on it. There's this story I read as a kid that lodged in my head as a metaphor ever since. This person grabbed onto the bottom rail of a ski lift, and then quickly realized: I'm getting increasingly distant from the ground, the snow under me is getting sparse, a fall will be fatal soon, and I'm not going to be able to hold on long enough to not fall 4 stories. The only answer was to let go and accept that they would probably break both legs and live, and every moment of hesitation was going to make the outcome worse. Our community is in the process of letting go, and falling to a leg break instead of a fatality.
