It is cheaper direct from the artist usually, while buying from a gallery boosts their reputation with people who can get them in front of even more people. Either way, you have art & the artist gets money! (And if you don’t have enough money for the art you love, get to know the artist - some are happy to barter if the exchange is for something they value.) Again, sounds obvious… but I married an artist and maybe it’s just apparent to me because of proximity.
