Thinking about selfhood and ethics is not frippery. Having coherent thoughts about them makes your life better, and gives you strength during difficult times.
If you do a lot of philosophy or literature reading, you certainly can develop your own thoughts about these things. But most people won't do that.

There are indeed some great self-help books out there, but they are more about pathology and healing rather than daily purpose and contemplation. In my latest podcast, I spoke with Eric Oliver, the author of a new book that develops a personal and ethical system for non-religious people.
