Business groups are warning John Healey against raising the minimum wage too far; but we've heard such warnings so often & the disaster they proclaim doesn't come to pass Better if business leaders showed some *actual* leadership & limited top managers' pay too (or better, commit to a lower multiple between staff & managers' pay). There may be a point where the minimum wage does have the effects warned of, but right now its the manager who cried wolf! #workers #inequality #politics h/t FT

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk > There may be a point where the minimum wage does have the effects The minimum wage should be replaced by a minimum income threshold that enables a basic standard of living within a given local authority area. The difference between this amount and the wage paid to an employee by a company operating in that area should be paid by the local authority and then, after adding administrative costs, recovered from that company via an individual tax assessment. The minimum income required to cover living costs, including housing and energy costs, should be set annually, taking into account forecast inflation.

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk In the late sixties the bottom to top pay ratio was 20:1 so there is a LOT of room to raise the lowest wages and relieve cost of living disparities without having to use taxes. The reason businesses don't, especiallymega corporations, is sheer unadulterated greed and the latest multi-billion windfall in the banking sector is proof of tgat.
