Reactionary Republicans for decades have wanted to destroy the post-WWII international order. Trump is doing it, and the changes nations are making in response to him are going to be very hard to undo. Moreover, why should countries trust that Americans wouldn't elect a raging lunatic again? https://www.theatlantic.com/national-security/2026/09/allies-trump-canada-foreign-policy/688729/

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social what is (or has been) their motivation to destroy the post-WW2 order, in your view?

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social I suspect there is a deeper issue: Europe and Asia are built on dead empires, people reluctantly recognise the pattern, Trump is just a symptom of decay. All the institutions that were supposed to keep him in check that failed will stay broken after he leaves…

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social I expect most of them are still going to live in expectation of the coming prosperity for at least another year or two before they give up. Long enough for him to start his third term with a sham election.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Convincing our electeds to put any binding guardrails on themselves going forward is a major project. Neither party is interested in giving up their insider trading, AIPAC ratings or other entrenched power.
