On the matter of Greek erasure in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Nolan's Odyssey isn't just a movie—it's the latest act in a 200-year-old tradition of appropriating Greek culture while denying that Greeks should have control of their own heritage. http://elizabethtai.com/2026/07/21/on-the-matter-of-greek-erasure-in-christopher-nolans-the-odyssey/ #links #blogging #odyssey2026 #odyssey #homer #greece #linkblogging

@liztai@hachyderm.io A retelling of the oldest written story in Western culture. Appropriation is one thing, but Greek culture, via Rome, and having blocked Persia, is the root from which much of our culture grew, I think. And language. I don't see why "200" years though, I'd call it a 6000 year descent. That the leaves should influence the roots doesn't seem wholly surprising.

@liztai@hachyderm.io Just wanted to add another perspective here regarding the diversity of the casting. I actually thought it might reflect blind racial casting, which you sometimes see in British theater and film more than American cinema. A good example is the David Copperfield adaptation from 2019 staring Dev Patel. When I saw the casting, that's how I read it. I didn't think it was some cynical attempt to appear progressive. I get the impression that Nolan is one Hollywood director at liberty to do what he wants and doesn't really care that much. In fact, the idea of diverse casting in an epic reminded me of Peter Brook's The Mahabharata. It is a 9 hour adaptation of the Indian epic with a multiethnic cast. This was done on purpose to emphasize the story's universal nature. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mahabharata_(1989_film) It is pretty interesting - you can find the 6 hour miniseries adaptation on YouTube. Again, not trying to negate your point - just wanted to add an additional perspective on this one point.
