The pressure, the speed, the neatness\--or lack of neatness\--of the writing--that tells us how far along we are in the process. When I started writing more neatly, started repeating myself, and writing in circles, I realized I was near the end. I kept the paper for about a year, but then threw it out. I never went back to read it, and I didn't want it anymore.
