"‘With the UK, the physical activity guidelines are all around moderate to vigorous physical activity, trying to get at least 2.5 hours, 150 minutes per week,’ Dr Blodgett explains. ‘But Canada has taken a different approach.’ Alongside Australia, she says, Canada has introduced 24-hour movement guidelines. ‘They specify that you still need that same amount of moderate to vigorous activity, but they also say you need to get seven to nine hours of sleep, and try to keep sedentary behaviour to less than eight hours a day.’"
The guidelines on sedentary behaviour are going to be tough to follow for anyone doing a full-time job - that's most or all of the eight hours' sedentary behaviour straightaway!
"Her advice is simple: break sedentary time up throughout the day. ‘We want those bouts of sitting to be as short as possible,’ she says. ‘Even every 15 to 30 minutes, can you stand up, move around a bit, then sit back down?’"
- In short, no! Every hour would be better.

"Research led by Dr Blodgett and published in 2023 supports this. The study found that replacing even five minutes of sedentary time with moderate-to-vigorous activity had a measurable benefit for heart health." - So every hour at work you get up to make a coffee or go to the toilet, which is difficult if you are in back-to-back meetings.
