The “can you do work on an iPad” debate is so simple. Some folks can and others can’t. Some people want to push the iPad harder than others, while some folks want to use what they’re familiar with. I promise we can all just use the computer we want and be okay.

@ismh Where are the clicks in that?

  • @ismh Wait. Stop. There’s no room for common sense on the Internet.

@ismh Except for the fact that iPads seem to be the platform where Apple is pushing the hardest in terms of hardware (like cellular, pen support, detachable keyboards, and now screens and processors too) and the least in terms of software?

@ismh And if you have to use a Mac to get your work done, go for it. Don’t pine (whine) over turning the iPad into a Mac.

@ismh It's like “Can you commute to school or work on a bicycle?”, but somehow the people who prefer or need a car want to argue that no one can be happy commuting on a bike.

  • @ismh I love my iPad mini. Best Apple device I‘ve ever owned. But even the most enthusiastic iPad users gave up getting work done. „Some/some“ suggests an 50/50 or 40/60 split. That‘s wrong. Your second paragraph should be „Very few can and most people can‘t, won‘t or don‘t need to. Some people tried to push the iPad harder and gave up, a small minority succeeded and the vast majority are happy iPad user while reading, browsing, playing, enjoying social media and so on.“

@ismh I agree completely, but is that really the debate going on? Maybe it's a function of the crowd I run in, but I feel like it's really more “this base model plus a keyboard attachment is 30% more than a macbook air, why am I still unable to do these other things?” Being able to just run iphone/ipad apps on my mac now is great but I don't think they did themselves any favors in this skirmish with that capability either. Gruber compared it to bike/car but there's way less price overlap there

@ismh I could replace my MacBook Air with an iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard. And I did for years. So much more versatile hardware. But it’s much hazzle without macOS. I think that’s why @viticci’s MacPad is appealing to so many.

@ismh Spot on! The religion in computers & tech, whether a sect of the same, or a different religion, creates so much vitriol. For me, iPad is no longer useful and creates unnecessary frustrations. For many others iPad is perfect because managing a computer stresses those users out and they don’t use most of the features. Either way, it’s all going to be ok.
