I think your solution is a ‘declarative operating system’, where you just have a config file and the system builds it-self from that. You can decide if the system is locked to certain version if you like. I know of Guix and NixOs, but maybe others exists. Alternatively an external scripting solution.
You still need to backup valuable local user data oc.

Yeah I guess something like NixOS might be the solution for me, even if it apparently comes with a steep learning curve… But it would not really answer my need to discover new distros and DEs while saving my settings in case I wanna go back to my old distros and.
