There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.&quot; John Adams I&#39;m not as pessimistic, maybe, as Adams was, but we are on the brink of that suicide in America, and Trump is not so much the gun we hold to our head as the needle in our arm. Can we stop? Anybody got Narcan?

Update, Wednesday, 9:30am ET: Trump TACOed, and Iran was not bombed back in the Stone Age. Not yet. Claims a "deal" and a ceasefire, but the Israelis are still bombing. Hegseth declares total victory (again). The stock market goes up, the price of oil down. The needle is still in our arm.

@tinydoctor@mstdn.social Democracy is the worst form of government there is, except for all the others. In seriousness though, humans have proven time and again to be incredibly susceptible to demagoguery. Wrap yourself in the flag and carry a cross (substitute your culture’s symbols here) and roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the population will cut off their own noses to follow you. Mandatory voting? A control yuan? Any fix requires representatives to vote to limit their own power, which is rare.
