In seriousness though, humans have proven time and again to be incredibly susceptible to demagoguery. Wrap yourself in the flag and carry a cross (substitute your culture’s symbols here) and roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the population will cut off their own noses to follow you. Mandatory voting? A control yuan? Any fix requires representatives to vote to limit their own power, which is rare.
