Does anyone actually use Coordinated Universal Time, UTC, properly? Whenever someone sends me a time in UTC in the northern-hemisphere summer, they actually mean British summertime, so they're one hour off. Or they mean 'European summertime' in which case they are two hours off.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green But BST is UTC+1. It is known. UTC is UTC; it never changes.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green I do, but being a radionerd of old, the audio sequence of the WWV time station is etched into my memory.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green It used to really annoy me because people would create meeting events with the time _labelled_ as UTC, but they meant BST, and I (in a different timezone altogether) would show up to the meeting at the wrong time.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green I’m always suspicious of someone from the UK quoting GMT, as they seem to think we still use GMT in the summer. But if someone says UTC they always mean it, in my experience.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green we do, but we are a geographically-dispersed organisation of the sort that puts "daylight confusion time" in everyone's calendars twice a year when Europe and North America are differently out of sync than usual.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green Sigh … it’s just more Anglocentrism thinking that UTC is some fancy international term for London time. I’d like this country to grow up one day.

  • @solar_chase@mastodon.green that’s a fun perk of working in a company full of programmers who have to deal with the headaches of time zone issues in time series data all day — we are all excellent at communicating datetimes unambiguously by now
