Personal opinion: Nowadays it’s extremely rude to try to call someone, let their phone with missed call and NOT to send them a quick message with tl;dr of what you wanted. Maybe it’s just the Millenial in me, but a missed call will cause panic and lack of explanatory message will make the panic go to overdrive.
