@enobacon@urbanists.social I think you're off by a couple orders of magnitude. USA has like 3 trillion vehicle-miles driven per year and maybe $300 billion of public road spending, across local+state+federal. So like $0.10 public cost per mile driven.

    @nathanw@metasocial.com our streets are decaying, cities are incurring debt by not being able to maintain the street at the rate of wear. What you cite is merely the national spending rate, not the actual cost of driving, which includes more than just building and maintenance of the street. And how much of that is even paid by car tax and fees?
