@nathanw@metasocial.com our streets are decaying, cities are incurring debt by not being able to maintain the street at the rate of wear. What you cite is merely the national spending rate, not the actual cost of driving, which includes more than just building and maintenance of the street. And how much of that is even paid by car tax and fees?

As for the second sentence, it's interesting that you bring that up; it wasn't in your original point or my response. As it happens, I agree that not nearly enough of the costs of driving are paid by road users, and would happily dial up some fuel/VMT/GVW taxes. Don't mistake me for pro-car; that's a slur.
