I'm a churchgoing Christian and this doesn't bother me at all.
Being from CNN, this article doesn't discuss the biggest reason so many churches are closing: they worshiped a failed real estate developer as Christ. Younger people and people of color have rightly fled from Christofascist churches.
Churches serving immigrants and refugees; churches that accommodate disability; mostly nonwhite churches; churches that serve those in poverty-- these are doing just fine.

What's circling the drain in civil society is white male supremacy and imperial attitudes. What's circling the drain in the church is the idolatrous worship of those things. My church not only retains its youth but has an unusually high rate of young people choosing to become priests. It turns out that the youth will stick around if they see people actually trying to live out Jesus' commands to love one another. They just don't like bigotry, hypocrisy, and greed, and I say good for them.
