@connections@tacobelllabs.net very cool... a type of equipment in your new museum that's still in actual service in some locations. Congratulations on the acquisition. Have you named a beverage for it at the Cross-Bar yet?

  • @connections@tacobelllabs.net Does it operate without all the cabinets at a lower capacity or do you need all of those to turn it on?

@connections@tacobelllabs.net As a mainframe cobol developer, that last picture tickles all the right brain chemicals.

  • @connections@tacobelllabs.net I remember back in 1988 when MIT got a 5ESS, replacing the earlier "dorm phone" system that ran on relays. I guess it was ok... but it was so expensive that MIT started trying to charge researchers for IP addresses to pay for it. This did... not go down well. Some of those researchers *invented* the protocols being used on the network. They did not take kindly to the idea that MIT had (essentially) kidnapped all the integers, and demanded you ransom/rent an integer for a monthly fee! I learned that centralized telecom controls lead to heavy-handed policies that serve the needs of central administrators.
