It’s telling that the only out trans woman in my masters in social work cohort (me) has 20 years experience in community development, a masters in public policy, and postgraduate research experience. Heck, I’m the only out trans and gender diverse person other than nonbinary she/they femmes. Just to be here, I have to be far beyond “queer excellence” and this isn’t even an elite university.

I should note, most of the cis women of color in my cohort also have years of work experience, and at least one also has a masters like me. Meanwhile, probably half the cis white women are straight out of their bachelors or have like 2 years experience. I’m not saying cis white women didn’t work hard to be here, it’s just telling the threshold for everyone else to even be here is higher
