My fursona is just my ideal IRL form. I've always wanted to be a meltcat, even before fully realizing the details of meltcats or giving the species that name. (In fact, Dragofelis was originally the species name when I made that Twitter handle, but is now my fursona's lastname and my legal middlename) As a teen I couldn't decide on a shape for my species. They were definitely cat-like, but do they have wings? Fins and gills? For a while I had a "kitchen sink, all at the same time" approach to their features, then a concept with modularity that made no biological sense, then one with consciously controllable growth, and finally, after learning about how caterpillars turn literally liquid while becoming butterflies, I stopped dismissing a liquid form as biologically implausible as I previously did. If I knew about caterpillar liquification earlier, I would probably have understood my species earlier too.
