@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz The confusion displayed in some of the comments is fascinating. In Swedish, the terms "clockwise" and "sunwise" are used interchangeably, so you have to be careful if you might be talking about the southern hemisphere.

  • @mansr@society.oftrolls.com - Hmm, I've never heard "sunwise". Maybe it's a more natural concept at high latitudes. I tend to orient myself using the Sun - I feel a bit uncomfortable if I don't know which way is north - so in Singapore I was often frustrated, because it's so close to the equator. But yes, it's interesting to see how some people haven't thought much about the motion of the Sun. For me it's part of being a physicist: physics starts out being about the motion of objects, and the heavenly bodies are really attention-grabbing.

    @mansr@society.oftrolls.com @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz in some languages (including many slavic languages), the word for "south" is the same as the word for "noon".
