@Cadbury_Moose@wandering.shop Similar story. Had Visa and Mastercard from Barclays back when lots of shops only took one or the other (kids these days wouldn't believe … up hill both ways, etc). Now both Visa. Savings in a building society which got eaten by another one (IIRC) which then got eaten by Barclays and became a savings account which spawned a couple of ISAs (still not clear on why it made sense to have two ISAs, but whatever) which all got closed for lack of activity despite my popping into a branch to ask them to keep them open and were a major hassle to reactivate and get my money back into usable form. Two cards is handy, though: one in wallet for day-to-day use and the other at home for online transactions and as a spare in case of wallet loss. But, yes, not much point in a third. As you say, iPhones are for calls, SMS and 2FA. Never connected mine to any Apple account, particularly after I noticed that it was “helpfully” uploading my Notes stuff to my ISP's mail server via IMAP. I sort of trust Apple not to be malicious (more than I trust Google, but that's not saying much) but I don't trust them to make what they're doing, albeit with good intentions, clear in the UI. Also the phone is very handy for web browsing - I use mine a lot for tracking buses. https://bustimes.org Life in rural Scotland for people who've stopped driving would be a lot more stressful not knowing when/whether buses are coming along.

  • @edavies@functional.cafe Ah! Barclays seem to be good at closing accounts for "inactivity". My main bank is the Halifax, which I moved back to after Lloyds screwed up with my current account in the late 70s. Now I find Lloyds have taken them over and the name itself is about to disappear. 3:O(> Barclays have also messed up their teffelone bonking - I used to be able to pay both credit cards off with one call - no longer: I now have to do the authentication dance on two separate calls, so will drop 1 card.
