Nor can I imagine a Senator refusing to divulge their vote & that not having exactly the same political effect as admitting they voted to convict.

I guess the optimistic scenario is that if he actually is removed, it becomes a lot more politically palatable for the many Republicans who had to defect to make that happen to publicly admit it after the fact.
