@AggroBoy@mastodon.social @codinghorror@infosec.exchange It seems to me that just asking this question reveals a lack of knowledge about how the program works.. The LLMs are programmed to generate an output that is the most statistically likely given the input. If you ask "do you have a sense of self" it will just regurgitate content that was answered when the same question was asked on forums like Reddit, stack overflow, fiction books etc. of course the content is going to be far from the truth. It's maybe better not to waste time, energy and resources using the slop machines and read a good book instead?

I think the counter-argument here is: this is obvious to us, but clearly not obvious to many, many users. We understand how this works, and can frame its response, and restrict our usage. Many users do not, and will not, and want to use this stuff, and instinctively want to feel like they are talking to a person of some kind. So there should probably be better guardrails against this kind of nonsense dangerously misleading folk.
