I really like the idea of having depth. I use "stickies" a lot, but I find in practice they're a bit annoying because I want them to live in their own layer.
Widgets such as plasma or the mac widgets don't quite solve this because they're more rigid "permanent" layers and not floating or context aware.

While layers "above" wouldn't be visible. I can imagine a "peek" below shortcut being handy to compare with the layer below. Either for onion skinning, reading back, comparing values, etc.
