I'm doing a 5 minute talk at the yearly conference of the Netherlands Standardisation Forum next week, on where human rights and standards meet.
Five minutes is very short, but long enough to get across that standardisation can indeed impact human rights, in good and bad ways.

At W3C we have standards that: a. help realise human rights (like WCAG, right to equal access, Web Sustainability Guidelines, various rights, and Global Privacy Control, right to privacy) b. could introduce human right risks when used maliciously (like Geolocation, there's privacy risks) The latter type needs to be mitigated, and various things at W3C are in place to help with that, including wide review, the Ethical Web Principles and the Societal Impact Questionnaire.
