@TechConnectify@mas.to Do a retrospective on attic fans (I think people call these “whole house” fans these days). These were super common in the South in 1950–70s construction: https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/cooling-whole-house-fan I haven’t seen one of these in decades.

@matt@proud.social @TechConnectify@mas.to I LOVED these in the spring. It felt so great to open the windows and turn this thing on.

@matt@proud.social @TechConnectify@mas.to The house where I lived in college had a whole-house fan, but set into a grate in the floor (you would not want to walk on it barefoot). My roommates and I called it the “giant sucky fan” and it made an unholy rattle.

@matt@proud.social @TechConnectify@mas.to Had one of those growing up! I honestly miss it. Was kinda loud being close to my room but if I propped my bedroom door open enough to block some sound but let air flow it felt great

  • @matt@proud.social This would be a welcome thing in Oregon, I would think...since everyone leaves windows open all night blasting fans because a/c is uncommon. @TechConnectify@mas.to

@matt@proud.social @TechConnectify@mas.to Pretty sure a relative of mine still has a working one for a garage building that's now used as an office and storage. They're quite good at keeping temperatures more bearable and also at sucking bugs in through the cracks under poorly fitted window screens.

@matt@proud.social @TechConnectify@mas.to I had one of these growing up. I'll vouch they work.
