FAQ of stuff people ask me often about my vegemite: Q. What does that taste like? A: Shoyu but for bread. Q. What's that made of? A: Used mold left over from beer production, fuckton of salt, flavourings. Q: Ah I get it, it's the same thing as marmite. A: Never repeat that statement again in front of an Australian, nor around me for that matter. (it's not. it tastes different. it has vegetable broth in it. like some sort of… "vege" mite.) Q: You keep it open outside the fridge? A: Honey this thing is basically brine, if some kind of bacteria manages to colonise it somehow I will let them give me food poisoning as a token of respect. Q: Did you live in Australia? A: Was only there for a conference. Had a queerplatonic sweet fling with a transmasc Japanologist, or as the Australians call it, a "golden gaytime". never saw them again. this is how I pine. Q: This thing is oddly addictive. A: Yes it is.

@elilla@transmom.love At my kids daycare they rotated spreads on breads and crackers to encourage kids to eat a wide variety of foods. So the kids alternated between marmite on rice crackers and vegemite on rice crackers every day for ~4 years. We're mainly a marmite house, but we keep both in the cupboard. In the great Maramite shortage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite_(New_Zealand)#2012%E2%80%9313_%22Marmageddon%22_shortage people bought out both vegemite and marmite jars that were decades old and still palatable.
