I frame my take on the saying differently than New Atheism's take a decade ago. It was a common saying in those circles. But the vibe when New Atheists said, "No gods, no masters." was largely, "Gods don't exist, so religion isn't my master." The deeper meaning of rejecting social hierarchy was missing. They were fine with their own accepted bodies of authority and hierarchy. It was just religion's authority they had a problem with.

  • And lo, the bodies of authority that they placed their faith in turned out to be corrupt and abusive as well. Badly so. New Atheism didn't have a problem with hierarchy and authority, as long as it was their own (cishet) white, male home-brewed varieties. They *only* had a problem with religion.
