So today's hyperfocus/thought. I swear I'm going somewhere with this, bear with me.
When I was a kid, I played a genesis RPG called 'Shining Force'. It was a tactical game with a basic plot:
The legend is, 1000 years ago, dark dragon invaded from another dimension, and the ancients fought back with the Powers of Light. They defeated Dark Dragon, and sealed him away, because his evil was so great, he couldn't be destroyed. Imprisoned in that other dimension, everyone has fogotten his vow to return. Now, 1000 years later, a mysterious new country has sprung up out of nowhere, invading with strange advanced technology, and the world needs someone new to wield the POWERS OF LIGHT. You fight monsters, meet gods, fight demons, etc. JRPG shit.
So you do so. You play an amnesiac boy named Max, who never gets his memories back, who seals away Dark Dragon. Theres a plot, there is, but its very straightforward. The ancients seemed to have technology rather than magic, WHICH IS WIERD, but never explained, and you use their POWERS OF LIGHT to seal dark dragon back in his other dimension.
The end, right?
Well, I found out today that for the US release, MOST OF THE PLOT WAS CUT OUT.
You see, you were supposed to find out that Max wasn't just an amnesiac, he lost his memory after being sent forward 1000 years into the future. He was sent here specifically to stop Dark Dragon. Who isn't some extradimensional entity, he's a biological weapon the ancients used to keep all their slaves in line.
You see, their technology got so great the ancients (who are EXPLICITLY HUMANS) made themselves immortal. Then they got bored so they made elves, dwarves and centaurs to amuse them, but they kept rebelling, so they made DARK DRAGON to put a stop to it. But it rebelled against them. They ended up locking their weapon away, but it killed most of them. So they send you forward into the future when the seals will weaken.
All those demons you kept fighting throughout the game? Their bosses, the demon lords? THOSE ARE WHATS LEFT OF HUMANITY. The surviving ancients started pretending to be gods or devils, and that's all thats left of them.
Everything else is descended from the few ancients who didn't do that, or more often then not, their slaves. Its why wierdly, your a human, but most of the starting kingdom is full of centaurs, except for an elf or two, but all the aristocracy everywhere are randomly human.
And this was cut out of the english version, until they did a re-release.

it just blows my mind that they got this huge, complex tactical game where it turns out all magic is really technology made via genetic engineering, where all the fantasy races are post-apoc descendents of freed slaves, and you eventually got to find this out after being told essentially, verifiably false religious myths, and for the english release said 'nah, this religion needs to be true, cut all that shit out'.
omg so emblematic of US culture.

and it gets wierder. There are MULTIPLE GAMES IN THIS SERIES.
The progression is:
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force (the above)
Shining Force 2
Shining Force Gaiden/Final Conflict
in the US.
The ACTUAL TIMELINE HOWEVER, is:
Shining Force
Shining Force Gaiden/Final Conflict
Shining Force 2
Shining in the Darkness (long after!)
You are given the impression that the secondary villain of 'Shining in the Darkness' returns for Shining Force later. The US marketing material made that clear.
The main character of Shining in the Darkness is the CHILD of two of Shining Force's secondary villains, who is sealed away in 'Shining force Gaiden', and then Shining Force 2 is a century later, and Shining in the Darkness takes place EVEN LATER, and they mistake the villain of that for his father.
But due to the US localization they set Shining in the Darkness as a prequel to Shining Force and make the villain the same.
