@angiebaby The sad thing about wanting to avoid becoming like someone is that you have to empathize with them to learn how they got to that point.
An abusive parent, for example, is a great example. If I just avoid the *behaviors*, I can emulate not being them, sure. I run the risk of becoming someone obsessed with my behavior and not introspecting on my core values.
To really avoid becoming an abusive parent, you have to really take yourself there. Mentally becoming them for a few minutes to understand how they justify their actions will take you leaps and bounds ahead of simply avoiding behaviors.
To me, that's when you can really become your own person.
