And it's also perfectly fine to give projects to other people once it does what you need. That version that does what you needed? Just use that! Let others take the project in a new direction if that's what they want, you don't have to own everything you make.
And even if you really want to, I'll let you in on a little secret: *you can fork your own project*. Just fork it, let a different community deal with owning the original and keep doing your own thing on the fork. You don't need ownership

But the idea that "you did free work for companies" just because companies literally did the thing you told them they could do is deeply idiotic. You literally said it was fair for someone else to derive as much value from your work as they could manage by releasing your work as FOSS. If that's not what you want, or now that your stuff is popular you suddenly want to get paid for it, you don't want free, open source software. You want something else.
