Is giving a false number an attempt at lessening the impact of rejection versus just saying “not interested” and walking away, or is it a safety thing?

a much better and less pressuring way to open the door to future communications is to offer them your own number. if they decline you know they arent interested and can move on. if they take it they can choose to just never contact you. it doesnt put the pressure on them in the moment and gives them space to decide later if they want. but who am i kidding the people who need to hear that the most dont care how uncomfortable they make people…

I don’t think there’s any harm in reading it back incorrectly, so long as you take the hint and fuck off if they don’t correct you. If they do correct you, maybe they were more interested than you thought. That said, just give them your number instead. That way, both of you know it’s correct (because who gives out a fake number unsolicited?), they know you’re interested (because you took the initiative), and they can decide to do what they want to with that information.

this isn’t always the case… perfect example; I witnessed someone hit someone else’s car in a parking lot. they saw me see them and asked what they should do. I told them wait, or leave a note with number/plate, explanation etc… they opted for the note. I sneakily took a photo of them and their plate because I don’t trust people and I waited in the lot for the one who was hit to come back. sure enough, they note that was left was missing 1 number. forwarded the pictures to the owner and he was able to find the actual driver through that/police. this is obviously an off circumstance and I do overall agree a fake number means f-off, but sometimes it shouldn’t mean that.

I’d just call it so she’d have mine too without even considering it’s a fake number. Although I’m actually capable of accepting no as an answer, so getting a fake number would be a huge blow to my confidence.

One time when I was single I went to the beach on my motorcycle. I parked next to a couple of other bikes, which was in a bit of a divet. When I finished at the beach, I got back to my bike and found one of the other bikes was owned by a cute girl. We started chatting for a bit and then she asked for help getting her bike out of the divet. I helped and we chatted for longer, so long she pushed her bike back in so a car could get by. We chatted more, pushed the bike out, chatted more, pushed the bike in. At this point I figured the interaction was going well as she could have left anytime, but kept going with the conversation. I asked for her number and if she wanted to ride sometime, she said sure and I handed her my phone. Later, I tried to call her and the number failed. During out conversation I remembered that she knew someone I worked with, so I went to him and handed him my phone and asked him to compare numbers. If it was completely off I would have gotten the hint and left it alone, if it was only a number off we both reasoned it could have been a fat-finger. It was only a digit off so he agreed to give me her real number and I reached out. Come to find out she meant to give me the wrong number because there was another guy she liked and didn’t want to ruin it by seeing another man. It was all cool and honestly a little funny for both of us, but she was nervous to turn down a man when she was alone because men can become aggressive. I understood and told her there were no hard feelings, I know there are far too many bad men out there. She reached back out to me a few years later, but by then I was states away and seeing someone else.

I’m a 6 foot tall trans woman. I tell them no and if they have a problem I start loudly talking in a deep voice.
