Some of the best trips I took while teaching at the Thai uni were those where I'd pick up my meager gov't paycheck, pay expenses, count the few remaining satang (so few) & take the cheapest train ride through the countryside to sit and read something like Primo Levi or Anthony Burgess at a ramshackle riverside bungalow.
