What's your favorite word in a foreign language you're learning? About two or three years ago, I already wrote about which words I like in Russian in my Telegram channel. Some of them were completely random words, for example, "скатерть." Yes, I really do like the way that word sounds, and I still feel the same way about it. But what about other languages? In my life, I've already studied English, German, Polish, a little Dutch, and now I've become pretty deeply immersed in Greek. Since this isn't some sudden obsession that flared up and then disappeared just as quickly, I'm taking my intentions with this language much more seriously. I've reached the point where I genuinely want to take a Greek proficiency exam. Of course, if you think about it, it's just a piece of paper, but yes, I want to officially prove that I know Greek. When exactly that will happen is a good question. But someday, definitely. So, have I found at least one word that has become my favorite? Yes. Actually, two. The first is "truth." In Greek, it's αλήθεια, and if you write it using Russian letters, it's roughly "алифья." I don't know why I find this word so beautiful. There's just something special about it. And the second is μάλιστα, malista, with the stress on the first syllable. It roughly means "of course", "yes", or "okay." The problem is that this word doesn't make me think of "of course" at all. I immediately picture myself walking down the street, tripping or bumping into something, and then... MAAAALISTAAAA! 😂 As if it were some kind of swear word. The funniest part is that I asked a few other people who don't know Greek what they thought, and they feel pretty much the same way 😂 What language are you learning, and what's your favorite word? #languages #greek #greece #fun #funny #linguistics #hobby
