In today’s smash the patriarchy saga: I spoke to my friend’s younger sister(my sister by default) yesterday. She is an intelligent, kind woman, also a dentist with a Master’s in Public Health. Her family is from a conservative North Indian town, where if your daughter isn’t married by 25, neighbours & relatives start asking -> What’s wrong with her? [Sorry it's India, we don't have concept of boundaries.] It doesn’t matter if the girl wants to study, work or build a life of her own.

The pressure begins almost as soon as a girl graduates at 21. Many women pursue higher studies not out of interest but simply to postpone the marriage trap. If you’re lucky, an understanding family gives you 5 more years. But cross 30 & even loving parents may start asking you to compromise. They may accept your choice of groom(provided caste, religion, class still fit). I am speaking about the majority of Indians. And if you don’t have anyone, you’re emotionally guilted into arranged meetings.
