Watched a dubbed copy of Captain Harlock YouTube recommended to me today. Wow, that does not hold up. I've heard better acting in local theater.
Is it magically better with subs? Is this why there was such disdain for dubs when I started watching?

@Canageek@wandering.shop Harlock gets a LOT better later in the series, when more of the conflict is obvious. It's very currently-relevant politics. But I've never heard the dub, I wouldn't even bother, nothing early is going to get a good one. It's also kinda crossover with Galaxy Express 999, which I've had the misfortune to hear dubs in the OVA hatchet jobs & ha ha never do that.

@Canageek@wandering.shop I went into the "prefers subs over dubs" camp after a ten minute introduction to Japanese pronouns and honorifics. That nuance is hard to translate and understanding it adds enough to my appreciation of the shows that I find it worthwhile.
