There were many other formats that came and went between vhs and dvd. There is a lot of media history being conveniently forgotten to make it seem like VHS was the only video format until 1995. I owned many of them at the time they came out. They all had advantages and drawbacks. when using the tv’s in most homes at the time, the advantages didn’t matter. You needed to use high resolution composite computer monitors with the video sources and surround sounds equipped receivers to get a sign...

When an objects time was nearly 5 decades that puts a bit of context around it. By modern standards nearly everything from decades ago is garbage. VHS has many competitors, but they were too expensive to really challenge for regular people. The quality of the media determined the quality of your experience. Cheap tapes broke and looked bad. The fact that a tape could be rented from blockbuster dozens of times really showed the durability of the media. Many tapes I had were pulled from re...

3chip cmos sensors are about 20-25 years out of date technology. Mosaic pattern sensors have eclipsed them on most imaging metrics.

Not sure how worth mentioning it is considering how good the overall write up is. Even though the human visual system has a non-linear perception of luminance. The camera data needs to be adjusted because the display has a non-linear response. The camera data is adjusted to make sure it appears linear to the displays face. So it’s display non-uniform response that is being corrected, not the human visual system. There is a bunch more that can be done and described.

Pretty impressive. The ability to operate 13 miles continuously makes un-teatherd humanoid robots viable for a lot of tasks. Once the AI is developed they could deliver mail or stock items in a department store. It'll be interesting to see how long it will be from this race before we see bi-pedal robots completing a full marathon.

That's one way to solve the AI data center cooling issue. Of course it would make the data centers deadly to support staff, so I anticipate that will make it to market.

I haven’t thought about it in a while but the premise of the article rings true. Desktops are overall disposable. Gpu generations are only really significant with new cpu generations. CPUs are the same with real performance needed a new chipset and motherboard. At that point you are replacing the whole system. Is there a platform that challenges that trend?
